Cheese found to stimulate drug-like euphoria | News Article

Michigan, USA - US researchers have found that cheese could be as addictive as hard drugs.

A report by the Evening Standard says scientists at the University of Michigan have found cheese to contain high levels of casein.

The chemical is said to trigger the brain's opioid receptors, producing a feeling of euphoria linked to those of hard drug addiction. It is reportedly found in all dairy products but is particularly concentrated in cheese.

The article quotes co-author of the study, Nicola Avena, as saying this could help change the approach to obesity treatment.

She says it may not be as simple as telling people to cut back on certain foods, but could instead call for methods used to curtail smoking, drinking and drug use.
