North West Nguni breeders named top emerging farmers─── 14:00 Wed, 09 Sep 2015

Bloemfontein - The owners of a North West Nguni cattle project have been announced as the national Emerging Beef Farmers of the year in the Agricultural Research Council’s (ARC) Beef Performers’ Awards.
According to a statement from the provincial agriculture department, Medupe Agricultural Projects was established by the elderly Medupe couple with loaned Nguni cattle in 2007. They have since grown their herd to 32 heifers, one bull and 28 calves.
Another North West cooperative, the Barui Driehoek Agricultural Cooperative, also held the province’s name high after scooping up the national award for Best Elite Cow of the Year.
Both of these projects were born out of the North West Nguni Cattle Development Project, a public private partnership started in 2006 between the Industrial Development Corporation, the North West Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development (READ) and the Northwest University (NWU).
The NWU has meanwhile congratulated the winners, saying the success of the project can be attributed to the wealth of expertise, hands-on experience and research provided by the partnership.
