Opinion: Water conservation | News Article

With the current water resources getting more and more unpredictable due to climate changes and evolution of nature worldwide, the onus is on everyone to reflect on what kind of life would we have should drought persist for extended period of time.

Internationally the 22nd March 2017 is a day to celebrate World Water Day and focus our attention on the importance of fresh water and advocate for the sustainable water resource management. Besides Western Cape that is still facing dire effects of drought, with dwindling dam levels, other provinces got a reprieve with some rains here and there. These rains have had positive effect on dam levels as they increased sharply.

In South Africa, the month of March is dedicated to water activities where awareness campaigns in communities are undertaken to educate about the importance of water conservation and raise awareness about drought.

Municipalities are also urged to participate and form their water awareness campaigns in mitigating unaccounted loss of water, be it from non-payment by the residents or leaking pipes that need to be reported via Toll Free numbers in municipalities.

Water has no colour or boundaries as such Government Departments and Entities are also encouraged to participate in water month celebration in a form of awareness campaigns and encourage people to use water sparingly..

Private sector is also urged to be participants in water month across the country as we all know ‘WATER IS LIVE” a commodity that is used on daily basis for all our requirements to sustain us and the machinery used in                   working environment.  Agricultural sector is also urged to participate and support water month after good rains that resuscitated crops on the verge of dying due to lack of rain.  “Water is Life”
