Johannesburg - Fifteen years ago, on 11 April 2001, at least forty-three people were killed in a stampede at Ellis Park stadium, Johannesburg, at a football match between South Africa's two biggest teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
Twenty-nine people died inside the stadium and a further fourteen died outside. Several children, including eleven-year-old Rosswinn Nation and thirteen-year-old Sphiwe Mpungose were under the fatalities.
A total of 250 people were injured as people poured into a stadium that was already over-crowded. Nine of the injured remained on the critical list.
Reports say that a police spokesperson mentioned a figure of about 120 000 fans that were at the stadium, which had a capacity of 60 000.
