#TravelTuesdays - Marico Biosphere Reserve in North West awaits you─── 10:51 Tue, 08 Sep 2020
With nature conservation at the heart of this UNESCO bio-sphere, there is a lot to do and explore. Listen to all the adventure that awaits you this tourism month in the North-West Province.
Located in the North-West province, this biosphere reserve comprises a unique freshwater ecosystem which includes the Molemane, Molopo and Marico river systems. In 2018 UNESCO awarded it with biosphere status. The ecosystem is characterized by wetlands and a dolomitic system, which constitute a valuable part of South Africa’s natural heritage. The savannah and grassland areas support vulnerable plant species such as Searsia maricoana. Endemic fauna include 73 species of mammal such as the African elephant, the black rhinoceros and the lion. The main economic activities are subsistence agriculture, livestock, game ranching and tourism. It is a bird lover's paradise.
I chat to Beatrice van der Merwe from the Marico Biosphere Reserve about their heritage, the activities that await you and why they need the community to get involved in their conservation activities. Take a listen to the podcast below.
Beatrice makes mention that some activities include scuba diving, hiking, game drives and eco-programs. Below you can also find out more about all the activities they have to offer.
