Correctional Services Deputy Minister arrived at FS Grootvlei prison cell─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:51 Fri, 21 Dec 2018
An intensified search by security personnel and police in the province is currently underway at the Grootvlei Correctional Service facility in Bloemfontein.
This comes as Deputy Minister of Correctional Services in the country, Thabang Makwetlwa, conducted a surprise raid at the facility in an effort to clamp down on contraband inside the prison cells. His visit follows a day after he undertook a similar raid in Johannesburg’s Sun City prison, where contraband such as cell phones, weapons and drugs were confiscated.
K-9 nine units are seen roaming the premises with a cross breed between the south African Boerboel and German Sheppard. OFM News can confirm that the Deputy Minister has arrived and is being briefed by the regional executive of the Correctional Services on today’s operations at Wepener, Winburg and Boshof, which are some of the other Correctional Services facilities in the province that will see this kind of raid.
The surprise search is part of Correctional Services’ aim to clean up the centres before Christmas. The search will be conducted by the Emergency Support Team, the South African Police Services and other law authorities.
