A shortage of Braille textbooks at a North West special school has raised concerns over the lack of resources at special needs schools.

This as Parliament’s Select Committee on Basic Education is on a week-long oversight visit to the North West to assess the state of readiness of schools for the upcoming final examinations.

The committee has during its visit called for special needs schools to be well-resourced, after a visit to the Christiana School for the Blind revealed there was a shortage of textbooks in Braille.

Despite this, the Committee Chairperson, Nomalungelo Gina, told OFM News the Christiana school has displayed significant improvement during this visit, stressing the shortage of textbooks does not affect grade 12 learners.

She says the committee has been very interested in Christiana and each visit to the school would often highlight glaring problems there, but they have begun to see some changes during the latest visits. They believe that the department is beginning to make headway in dealing with the challenges at the school.

She adds the committee is focusing on special needs schools during their visit, in light of sign language being officially recognised as a home language and part of the overt curriculum that will be the examinable subjects for the National Senior Certificate in the education system.

Gina says the Department of Basic Education and the provincial MECs have committed to procure textbooks to deal with the shortage. The Committee is currently inspecting schools in Mahikeng, before rounding off their visit with a debriefing with the North West Education Department tomorrow.

The North West Education Department is yet to comment on the visit.
