Bloemfontein’s most famous school, Grey College Secondary, has kicked its headmaster, Deon Scheepers, to the curb.

Scheepers, who landed the top job at the school in 2013, has been stripped of most of his duties after a decision by the school’s governing body.

Henry Büchner, Chairman of the Grey College Secondary’s School Governing Body, announced this drastic management decision in a press release, citing the breakdown of trust between the governing body and the school principal. This decision comes after the school’s governing body met with Scheepers last night.

OFM News has learned that pupils and teachers were informed about the decision this morning, with a source saying Büchner said the head of Grey Primary, Jurie Geldenhuys, will step in as interim school manager.

Scheepers could not be reached for comment, and the Department of Education in the Free State’s spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, said he was unaware of the decision when OFM News contacted him but will respond as soon as he has confirmation.

“Scheepers, as an employee of the Free State Education Department, will continue with his professional duty of school principal, limited to only those powers assigned to him in terms of the Schools’ Act,” according to the press release.

Sources say Scheepers’ term as headmaster has been rocky at times, and he was audited by the Education Department last year. The outcome of this audit is not known at this stage.

According to the South African Schools’ Act, a governing body has the mandate to delegate control regarding discipline, personnel, school grounds, academics and hostels to the headmaster.
