Five suspects arrested in connection with a burglary at a school in Monyakeng, Wesselsbron, in which among others, school uniforms and shoes were stolen, are expected to appear in the local Magistrate's Court today.
Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says two suspects were arrested on Wednesday this week following the burglary at the school the previous day.
According to him, members of the Public Order Policing Reaction Team followed up leads after interrogating the two suspects arrested by police in Wesselsbron. This led to the arrest of three additional suspects. Police managed to confiscate items believed to have been stolen at the school.
Thakeng says the two suspects who were arrested by Wesselsbron police members agreed to take police to where the alleged stolen items were hidden in Monyakeng. While police were on their way to a third suspect’s home, he was seen walking down the road. He was apprehended and accompanied police to his house in Kgang Street. The house was searched and 20 pairs of school shoes, two large speakers and four smaller speakers were confiscated. Police also went to another house in Monyakeng where a fourth suspect was arrested. A white Nissan Sentra that was allegedly used to transport the stolen items to Welkom, was confiscated at the house.
A fifth suspect was arrested in Welkom after another 20 pairs of school shoes, two large speakers and four small speakers, four laptops, seven cell phones, 10 digital cameras, four monitors and four computer towers were found. The value of all the seized items amounts to R100 000.
Thakeng says the school headmaster has identified all the seized items, mostly items that were donated to the school, as the property of the school. The items were donated to the school.
The suspects face charges of burglary, possession of suspected stolen items, and the use of a vehicle in the commission of a crime.
