Bloemfontein - Students from the University of the Free State (UFS) and the Central University of Technology (CUT) have said that they are tired of always being victims of crime.

Hundreds of students and staff members from both institutions converged in a safety march to air their grievances against crime on Thursday.

A memorandum of grievances was handed over to the Mangaung Municipality as well as the South African Police Service.

Students said they would like the university, the local municipality, and the police to put in place sufficient safety measures because they are seen as easy targets by criminals.

“I decided to come to this march today because I think it’s important for us girls. We get assaulted and mugged all the time,” said Roxanne, a nursing student from the UFS.

Katlego Marumo said she didn’t attend the march for herself only, but for other victims of crime.

“I have friends who live off campus. I know one who has been a victim of theft. It’s a very important march and we came to raise awareness for both people living on and off campus,” she said.

Police commissioner, Leboana Tsumane, accepted the memorandum of grievances from the students on behalf of the MEC of Police, Roads, and Transport, Sam Mashinini. He says his office will respond to the memorandum as soon as possible.
