Child abuse increases at alarming rate | News Article

Kimberley - Childline South Africa in the Northern Cape says reports of child abuse and sexual assault against children is increasing at an alarming rate.

The non-profit organisation’s Innocentia Mosemeng says there are cases of abuse on a daily basis and some are still not reported. Childline, in partnership with civil society organisations and the provincial government, earlier today took to the streets of Kimberley to march against child abuse in the province.

Mosemeng says there is an urgent need to raise awareness of injustices children are faced with. She says the most prevalent form of child abuse reported across their centres is sexual abuse.

“We are saying enough is enough. We need to take a stand together with the community to address this challenge and the social ills of child abuse. Today’s march was also to market Childline and to say we have this toll-free number. Make use of the service to report the cases, so that each and every child in an abusive relationship is receiving the necessary help."

She adds that 17 May is International Child Helpline Day and this day is therefore used to highlight injustices children are faced with.

She says they will soon be embarking on a programme targeting schools to educate learners on what they can do, should they experience or come across any form of abuse. She adds that everyone has to play their part in creating a safe and child-friendly environment. “We urge people to take note that there are different forms of child abuse and they should also not turn a blind eye to emotional abuse because it is the least reported form of abuse.”
