History made at the Metsimaholo Municipality in the FS─── MARK STEENBOK 10:53 Thu, 25 Aug 2016
Sasolburg - History was made at the Metsimaholo Municipality in the Free State recently after the Democratic Alliance (DA) unseated the African National Congress (ANC) at the municipality.
The DA, in partnership with different parties, formed the first ever coalition government in the province. The party formed the coalition with smaller political parties including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the Metsimaholo Community Association (MCA) and the Freedom Front Plus.
The ANC received 19 seats in council, whilst collectively the opposition received 23 seats. The municipality is the first in the province to be DA-run since 1994. The newly elected mayor from the MCA, Sello Hlasa, told OFM News that the road ahead for them will not be easy.
“Our people did not feel that this was their municipality. They felt like they were alienated from the municipality. We need to enhance our community relations. We need to restore trust between government and citizens. Our councillors need to be active, they need to be visible, they need to consult and they need to communicate effectively with the community,” Hlasa said.
Arnoldi du Plooy and Linda Radebe, both from the DA, were elected as speaker and Council Whip respectively.
