Final decision not made on how long NWU Mafikeng campus will be closed─── MARK STEENBOK 11:43 Sat, 27 Feb 2016
Mahikeng - A final decision has not been made on how long the North West University's Mahikeng campus will be closed.
This is according to university spokesperson, Koos Degenaar.
Academic activities were suspended indefinitely at the campus after violent protests by students on Wednesday, which resulted in cars and two buildings being torched.
Roughly 3 000 residential students and about 600 academic and support staff had to be evacuated. Students were against the election of a new Student Representative Council.
Degenaar says the situation is relatively quiet on campus today.
Meanwhile, access to the North West University's Potchefstroom campus is being restricted following protests.
This is according to rector, Prof. Fika Janse van Rensburg. Students and contract workers gathered and protested "illegally" on campus yesterday, littering and throwing garbage around.
Janse van Rensburg says the perpetrators have been identified and the students involved will be charged immediately and face disciplinary action. He says the employees involved have breached their contract with their employers and their access to the campus will be denied.
