Kimberley - The Sol Plaatje municipality welcomed the opening of the Kamfersdam-Postmasburg line by Transnet on Monday. The refurbishment forms part of the interventions implemented at the Homevale Waste Water treatment works which was operating at above its design capacity. The Sol Plaatje Municipality identified the urgent need to increase the treatment capacity of the works.

“We spent more than 100 million rand for the refurbishments and part of that was to divert the water from the line. We needed to get an alternative catchment area for the water. That is why Transnet provided the money and we built the pipeline from the Homevale Waste Water treatment plant. We are now able to pump it away from the line,” said the Sol Plaatje municipality spokesperson, Sello Matsie.

The pipeline that is meant to divert excess water to the farm Langleg started last year in September as part of ensuring that the line is no longer threatened due to excess water. Matsie says the line was closed in 2011 because it was flooded with water from Kamfersdam for a few months. There was a need to divert the water that caused the instability of the main line.

According to Matsie the final phase of the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. This will increase the capacity of the works to treat waste by approximately 50 percent and enable it to receive waste from further developments in the northern areas of Kimberley.
