“How to approach home-schooling from a Biblical worldview.”

An American Christian curriculum writer with 43 years of experience in home-schooling will host a home-schooling and family talks event in Bloemfontein later this month.

This event aims to speak to parents on how to teach their children Biblical values, create awareness of home-schooling, and use the Christian home-school curriculum.

Kevin Swanson home-schooled himself in the 1960s and ’70s, and with his wife Brenda, they are home-schooling their five children. With more than 43 years of experience in the home-schooling movement, Swanson wants to strengthen home-school families nationwide.

“Schools used to be public schools but these days it is becoming more state schools, which means the government is controlling the schools more, which leads to them being indoctrinated and tyrannical,” said event organiser Gregory Pereira.

“As Christians, we want to teach our children biblical values, we don’t want them to be indoctrinated and become secular humanists who turn their backs on God.”

The reason they do home-schooling is to teach their children what they believe and so that their children won’t be indoctrinated by the different religions, he said.

According to Swanson, there are three philosophies of education which are: education can be worldview-neutral, education must be secular, and these two are incorrect and the correct one is education must be Christian.

Business Tech reports the Bela Bill aims to bring increased regulation to schools and homeschoolers across South Africa. It requires all home-schooled learners to be registered with the Department of Basic Education.

Another area to note is Section 51 of the Bela Bill, which provides the education minister unlimited power to regulate home education.

This means that parents will need to register to home-school their child and must provide reasons to their provincial education department why they are acting in their child’s best interest with an approach that ensures the child is educated at a standard not inferior to public schools.

‘The home school curriculum helps parents integrate God’s Word’

“The home school curriculum that I created 15 years ago helps parents integrate God’s Word into every subject,” said Swanson.

“The Christian Discipleship Curriculum acknowledges God and gives Him praise on almost every page of our science curriculum.”

• The event will be hosted at the APK Church in Uitsig, Bloemfontein on Sunday, 22 September. Visit Biblical Christian Network for more information.
