“So, it was exciting, and it was nice to be able to steal a couple shots and get back in the tournament. It was extremely important. That's why I think you saw a bit of emotion there.”

The world number one, Scottie Scheffler, will take the lead into the fourth and final round of the 88th Masters at Augusta in Georgia.

Scheffler fired a third round of one-under-par 71 to hold a one-stroke lead going into Sunday's final round of the year's first major.

His American compatriot, Collin Morikawa, is a further stroke back on six-under-par, while Max Homa, also of the USA, is on five-under-par to round off the top three.

The leader after the first two rounds, Bryson DeChambeau, shot one-over-par 73 on Saturday to drop down to three-under-par and he will start the final round in fifth.

Scheffler, who also led going into the final round in 2022, said things happen fast at Augusta and it’s important to keep the emotions in check.

“Things happen pretty fast out there,” said Scheffler.

“That putt on 13 was nice because it was trickling up towards the cup. I didn't know whether or not it was going to get there, and it kind of just nudged right over the edge and went in.

“So, it was exciting, and it was nice to be able to steal a couple shots and get back in the tournament. It was extremely important. That's why I think you saw a bit of emotion there.”

The only South African to make the cut, Erik van Rooyen, shot six-over-par 78 on Saturday to drop all the way down to nine-over-par from a share of 47th with Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain and Camilo Villegas of Columbia.

The final round will tee-off at 15:15 on Sunday afternoon with Adam Hadwin of Canada and Vijay Singh of Fiji on the tee.
