The Bloemfontein golfer, Gabbi Venter, did the Free State and South Africa proud yesterday at the home of golf, St Andrews in Scotland.
Venter, who plays out of the Bloemfontein Golf Club, won the 2022 St Andrews Junior Ladies Open.
The grade 12 learner from Eunice Girls' High beat Katie Stephens of England 4 & 3 in the final to earn arguably the biggest tournament of her promising career.
The daughter of the former Free State cricketer, Kosie Venter, is currently South Africa’s number one ranked GolfRSA player.
Her win is even more remarkable as it was her first-ever links golf experience.
She shot 6-under-par on the Strathtyrum Course in the 18-hole qualifier to win by 5 shots.
Venter played on the Eden Course ahead of the qualifier, but she had to play the semi-final and final rounds at the Old Course blind and in very strong wind.
