Professional cricketers in South Africa will not have to worry about pay cuts for the foreseeable future. This is according to the acting CEO of Cricket South Africa, Dr Jacques Faul.

Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, there is a growing trend that sportsmen and women across the world are going to have to accept pay cuts, however, in South Africa, the cricketers are still safe for the time being.

Where the players will be losing out will be match fees and winning bonuses during upcoming in or outgoing tours. That is if in the event of tours being called.

Addressing the media via an online press conference on Tuesday morning, Faul did warn that in future players may well receive somewhat less of an allocation from the payment pool.

“For now we’ve have budgeted for the amount, it’s a centralised system. Both the Proteas and the franchises players have been budgeted for. At this stage will have enough capacity to see through the next season.

“Where the players will lose out will be with match fees at an international level, and they will also be losing out on winning bonuses. In terms of the MOU agreement that goes back into the payment pool, so they will, of course, benefit from it. If these tours are rescheduled they will receive the money.

“Long term wise, even if we are covered for this season, we’ll have to have a look at what the financial impact will be post this season, and how much money will be available to contract players.

“At this stage, we are doing scenario planning over three months, six months and nine months. There might be a likelihood, but we’ve got to approach the numbers first and experience the total effect of COVID-19. There is a possibility that players would be receiving less of the player-payment pool.

“In our situation, I cannot see anybody getting less money than what they are contracted for. I cannot see that happening, but in future the allocation going to players, I can see that there is a likelihood that that would be less.”

It has already been mentioned that cricketers in England and Australia are going to have to face salary cuts.
