Two brothers are expected in court on Wednesday (4/12) for possession of a firearm, which belonged to a security official who was murdered in Danville, North West.
After apprehending the suspects police, searched their rented rooms and found six rounds of ammunition and a holster.
It was discovered the brothers worked at the same security company as the two security officers that were killed in November.
The suspects were apprehended by Mahikeng Visible Policing members, working together with police reservists and the local Community Police Forum.
Slain officer’s firearm
“The team was performing Safer Festive Season Operation patrol duties on Friday night (29/11), when they spotted two suspicious males on Station Road, Mahikeng. The pair ran away when approached, but were soon apprehended,” said provincial police spokesperson Adele Myburgh.
A loaded 9mm Glock pistol was found in one of the suspects’ bags. The men were taken to the police station, since they were unable to give a reason for being in possession of the firearm.
“Subsequent to the circulation of the firearm, it showed that it (the firearm) belonged to one of the two security officers who were found dead on Sunday (17/11), near Danville, Mahikeng.”
Vigilance praised
“The accused, Zithembe Zondi (27) and Sthembiso Zondi (43), appeared before the Molopo Regional Court in Mmabatho on Monday (2/12),” added Myburgh.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Sello Kwena thanked the team for their vigilance and cooperation, which led to the arrest and recoveries.
He said the success came due to excellent police community relations and the reservists who displayed the will to serve communities.
