The Kimberley SPCA has confiscated five emaciated horses in Ritchie who were left without food.

Officials took the animals to the Kimberley SPCA due to the state they were in, but a vet has yet to determine the severity of their condition.

“The horses have been stabled and require feed to recover. We’re in dire need of donations of teff, eragrostis, lucerne, and horse feed pellets, as our existing stock is running very low,” said SPCA manager and inspector, Mario van der Westhuizen.

The horses’ previous owners will be dealt with by the law and regulations regarding the maltreatment and trauma they endured. “Qualified SPCA inspectors will investigate the complaint and decide what course of action needs to be taken,” Van der Westhuizen said.

The Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962 stipulates if anyone is found to be guilty of an offence they are liable on conviction to a fine or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 12 months or to such imprisonment without the option of a fine.

The SPCA is also in need of deworming paste for the horses and has booked a farrier to attend to their hooves. A vet provides a treatment and feeding plan based on their condition.

“We are waiting on a veterinary report before we decide on the way forward. For now, they’re safely in our care and have been provided with shelter, water, and food.”

Readers who wish to donate any of the items needed to rehabilitate the horses may contact the SPCA on 053 831 7625/082 376 7679. Alternatively, donations may be made via an online card payment through the SPCA Yoco payment page.

“Every donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in these horses’ lives,” said Van der Merwe.
