“This was the first year that both the boys were selected for the young scientist expo and now to participate in the International fair.”

Two learners from Williams Pescod High School in Kimberley will represent their school and city at the Eskom International Science Fair later this month.

Emile Dawson (17) and Ismaeel Cader (17) were selected after the regional Eskom Young Scientist expo at Sol Plaatje University last month.

This was the first year that they were selected for the young scientist expo and to participate in the international fair.

At the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, students present their projects about the scientific investigations they have worked on throughout the year to various judges.

At the annual prestigious Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair, selected students from 35 Expo Regions in South Africa will compete against the best young scientists from around the country and worldwide.

Their project is aimed at tackling current issues faced in schools cost-effectively and innovatively.

“Our project is basically about how we can create an inclusive environment within schools for all types of intelligence, especially schools that lack the resources through innovative and cost-effective initiatives,” said Ismaeel.

They will be travelling to present their project to a panel of judges at the Convention Centre at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park from 23 to 27 September.

An opportunity to learn more

Emile and Ismaeel feel the same way about science. Their curiosity about the earth and all things one could learn from scientists brings them joy knowing they have been selected to present at an international event and to observe the best of the best.

These science events offer them an opportunity to learn more and allow them to test multiple theories in the field they would like to pursue after school.
