“The Geo-FEST also intends to create a platform for learners where they will have fun showing off their talent and passion in the subject”

Floors High School has been crowned the winner in Sol Plaatje University’s annual Geography Festival in Kimberley.

Grade 10 and 11 learners from schools in the Francis Baard District were invited to participate, as well as learners who participated in the RCL Leadership training facilitated by the GM Sentletse Foundation earlier this year.

“The main intention of the Geography Festival is to reposition it as a Science subject, as an option for career choices and most importantly grow the love for Geography as a subject of choice when learners confidently express understanding of the subject content,” said Sol Plaatje Geography Department lecturer Anthony Tebogo Selebogo

“The Geo-FEST also intends to create a platform for learners where they will have fun showing off their talent and passion in the subject. Learners will come together at one venue to have their presentations on the topic of their choice on the alternatives given.”

The categories for Grade 10 focus on doing PowerPoint on their chosen topic, while Grade 11 focuses on creating an information stall with their subject model.

Floors High took the trophy with 119.5 points in the Grade 11 results. Second place went to Retlamile High School with 118 points, followed closely by Emang Mmogo High in third place with 117.5 points.

The department hopes to grow the festival into a bigger platform in the future.

“We intend to have this festival taking place from district elimination levels that will culminate into the provincial event, and soon national event.”
