“The suspects collectively submitted a falsified application for funding to the National Lottery Commission (NLC).”

Two suspects are expected to appear in the Kimberley crime court on Friday (23/8) for allegedly defrauding the National Lottery Commission (NLC).

Jeremani Sedibe (52) and Malesela Khoza (35) made their first court appearance on Wednesday (21/8) on charges of alleged fraud where they were remanded in custody.

The case dates back to August 2021 when the duo submitted a false application for funding to the NLC on the pretense that they were committee members of a nonprofit organisation called Kgatelopele Foundation.

“The two suspects … were arrested by the Hawks on Wednesday in Soweto for alleged fraud,” said Northern Cape Hawks spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi.

When the foundation received the funding application it was taken through the NLC’s processes. Funding of R885,000 was approved.

The commission made the first payment of R500,000 to the foundation, while R380,000 was due to be paid after the receipt of a progress report on the projects was received.

The money was to be utilised for the community of Platfontein.
