“The victim visited Van den Berg’s home daily after school, where he would prepare food for her before sexually abusing her.”
An elderly man from Petrusburg in the Free State is set to learn on Thursday (8/8) whether he will be granted bail in connection with charges of raping a minor.
Albertus Hendrik van den Berg (82) appeared in the Petrusburg Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed to allow for the continuation of the formal bail application process.
The allegations against Van den Berg came to light on July 16 when a concerned parent at a school meeting reported to a teacher that a young girl (8) had been discussing how she frequently visited Van den Berg’s home and was allegedly subjected to sexual abuse. The teacher then informed the police, prompting an investigation.
‘He would prepare food for her before sexually abusing her’
The victim reportedly visited his home daily after school, where he would prepare food for her before sexually abusing her. The police took immediate action, leading to Van den Berg’s arrest on Tuesday (23/7).
Free State police spokesperson Sinah Mpakane confirmed Van den Berg has appeared in court multiple times since his arrest. The bail application is set to continue on Thursday, and the court’s decision on whether he will be granted bail remains pending.
A source who wished to remain unanimous told OFM News that the victim had been provided with the support of a social worker from the school.
‘Lure other minors through social media platforms’
Allegations emerged that Van den Berg may have a history of abusing young girls, with claims that he used a girl (13) to lure other minors through social media platforms like Facebook.
It’s also alleged that he has used his influence and business holdings in Petrusburg to evade accountability, with allegations that he has bribed individuals with food and money to suppress complaints against him. The Free State Department of Education has yet to comment on the matter.
