Three people have passed away following a head-on collision between two cars on the N1 10km from the Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza in the Free State.
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson in the Free State, Sipho Towa, says their team was called to attend to the injured on the accident scene between Winburg and Verkeerdevlei at about 04:45.
On arrival, they discovered two light motor vehicles, a white Volkswagen Vivo with Eastern Cape number plates and a silver Hyundai Getz with Gauteng number plates collided head-on.
‘Three adult males were declared dead on the scene’
Two men were injured moderately while another two were in a serious condition. One of them was trapped in the wreck and the jaws of life had to be used to extract him.
Towa added that three adult males were declared dead on the scene. The patients were transported to the Pelenomi Trauma Unit and Winburg Hospital by EMS and ER24.
According to Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, a case of culpable homicide has been registered for further investigation.
Both lanes are open again for traffic.
