“The ongoing violence has prompted calls for more stringent measures and proactive efforts to protect women and children in the Free State.”

The escalating violence against women and children in the Free State has become a major concern for the community.

Despite desperate calls from provincial government leaders, churches, political parties, and activists to end gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), the killings continue unabated.

In the latest incident, the body of a woman (21) from Leratswana near Arlington was discovered at the Lindley dumping site. The woman was found on Sunday (21/7) around 08:30 after police were alerted, said Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring.

She had multiple wounds and was rushed to Bethlehem Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. She was identified by her parents.

Police are investigating the murder, but have yet to make any arrests. They’ve appealed to the community for any information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, the body of Disebo Portia Mosupa (30) was exhumed by forensic investigators at Thabong Cemeteries after being found buried in a used grave on Friday (19/7). Mosupa was reported missing on Monday (15/7), and a search by community members, police, and family led to the discovery of her body.

Two suspects, one believed to be her boyfriend, have been arrested in connection with her murder. Free State MECs and Matjhabeng municipal workers have expressed profound sadness over the loss of their colleague.

The Prosecuting Authourity spokesperson in the Free State and Northern Cape, Mojalefa Senokoatsane says the case against Lawrence Ncanca (37) and Andile Siyoko (42) was remanded to 22 August 2024 for further investigations. Accused 2, was added to the case today. They both have been remanded in custody. Senokoatsanae said the state will oppose any possible bail application by the accused.

ANC Free State spokesperson Jabu Mbalula voiced deep concern over the rising cases of GBVF in the province. He emphasised that many recent incidents were committed by individuals whom the victims regarded as intimate partners.

Mbalula said the ANC will launch an aggressive program led by men to combat the scourge of GBVF. He urged community members to alert law enforcement agencies about any activities that may violate the rights of women and children.

EFF Provincial Treasurer Seipati Nanyane recently expressed serious concerns about corrupt police officers following an incident where an alleged wife-killer was not arrested, despite reports of arrests by the police. Police confirmed they were investigating the officer-in-charge of the case but could not provide further details. Nanyane called for the immediate arrest of corrupt police officers.

The ongoing violence has prompted calls for more stringent measures and proactive efforts to protect women and children in the Free State. Premier Letsoha Mathae, and various community leaders, continue to appeal for an end to GBVF.
