Free State MEC condemns increasing violence against women, children─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:35 Sun, 21 Jul 2024

“With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and to many families in the province who have been affected by these criminals and the senseless killings of our children.”
The MEC for Community Safety and Transport in the Free State has strongly condemned the ongoing violence against women and children in the province.
This condemnation follows the tragic discovery of the body of Disebo Mosupa (30), an ANC Youth League member and Matjhabeng employee, found in a shallow grave. The discovery came just a day after a government delegation visited Mosupa’s family.
MEC Jabu Mabalula expressed deep concern over the increasing violence targeting women, calling it a pandemic that must be urgently addressed.
“This behaviour is extremely worrisome as it targets the most vulnerable group. We cannot continue like this. We must bring a stop to this pandemic,” Mabalula stated.
The MEC emphasised the responsibility of protecting women and condemned those who perpetrate such violence.
“The executive authority strongly condemns such inhumane behaviour, especially from those who are supposed to protect women. With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and to many families in the province who have been affected by these criminals and the senseless killings of our children. My deepest sympathy with you and your family,” he said.
Provincial police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng reported a suspect (37), who is a friend of Mosupa’s boyfriend, has been arrested. Meanwhile, Mosupa’s boyfriend remains at large. The public has expressed their outrage and frustration on social media, particularly directed at the Mosupa’s boyfriend.
The alarming trend of women being killed by their partners in the province has raised serious concerns about men’s mental health issues.
Several incidents in the Free State have seen men arrested for allegedly killing their partners, highlighting a critical need for intervention and support systems.
