“The primary objective is to address challenges faced by schools with a pass rate of less than 70% in the 2023 academic year.”

To boost matric results, the North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, will address underperforming schools in the province. The meeting is scheduled for 5 July 2024 at the Seasons Weddings and Conference Centre in Mahikeng.

Motsumi is expected to meet with principals of underperforming schools and senior management teams of the department to discuss and resolve any concerns.

North West Department of Education spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane, has indicated that the primary objective is to address challenges faced by schools with a pass rate of less than 70% in the 2023 academic year.

Motsumi has emphasised a zero-tolerance policy for schools that perform below the 70% average this past academic year.

In 2023, the province obtained the fourth position with its national matric results with 81,6% – an increase of 1,8%. The Bojanala District took the first position in the province with 84,2%.

“I courteously implore all of our educational stakeholders to join forces with the department, to achieve our goal of being among the top three,” said Motsumi.

‘The province should compete for top positions’

About 74 schools in the province underperformed in the 2023 academic year.

Molokwane told OFM News that the department calls on stakeholders to join and uphold the vision set for the previous matric performance.

Winter School Camps have been underway since the holiday break, focusing on providing extra time for learners in preparation and effort to improve results.

Motsumi has since her appointment to the department, emphasised improving matric results and made intentions clear that the province should compete for top positions.
