“The DA also opposed the latest budget as it didn’t speak to the immediate service delivery issues faced in Letsemeng.”

Residents of Petrusburg in the western Free State have consistently been faced with issues regarding overflowing sewers and water leaks.

Letsemeng Municipality has been informed of the problem regularly, but nothing has been done about it.

DA councillor Mariska Potgieter has called for immediate action and says to continue applying pressure on Mayor Bonolo Mockwalede until the water and sewage leakages in Letsemeng are addressed.

“The reluctance to attend to these issues worsens the state of aged and damaged infrastructure, not only increasing the cost to construct and maintain bulk water supply but also posing a direct risk to residents’ health,” said Potgieter.

A resident experiencing these issues this week spoke to OFM News discussing her disappointment and frustration with the service delivery time from the municipality and their sense of urgency to respond to their issues.

The resident spoke about the fact that they have been having the issue for the past three months and have contacted multiple government structures, yet no success.

Another resident who has been experiencing sewerage issues was sent to the hospital due to the sewage that has been in her yard for months.

The DA also opposed the latest budget as it did not speak to the immediate service delivery issues faced in Letsemeng.

“Allocating enough funds towards the maintenance of infrastructure as well as daily maintenance schedules with maintenance teams in the technical department, will assist in preventing this crisis.”

OFM News also approached the municipality with this information to which they said the complaint has been attended to and they will be sending out responses shortly.
