“The sewage was turning green in the streets, and you couldn’t drive in the streets, your vehicle got stuck in the mud that was caused by the sewage.”

Residents from the Letsemeng Municipality have been stuck with a sewage problem for more than three months, without proper assistance from the municipality.

This is a continuous issue that makes residents sick. Every other month the problem gets resolved, and then it happens again.

“The municipality has been here once, it alleviated for a day and it started again. It has been reported to the municipality on various occasions in the past four days I think it has been reported over eight times by various people,” said Petrusburg resident Michelle van Woerden

The municipality promised to go to these properties to fix the issue but they have not fulfilled their promise. Van Woerden said on Sunday (23/6) municipal workers were seen sitting in the street but did not tend to the issue at the correct houses.

An elderly resident has been admitted to hospital due to the state of the sewage leakages.

This is not the first time a sewage issue has been reported by residents, a few months ago a huge sewage leakage was reported in a street nearby and the municipality could only resolve the problem after four months of working on it.

“The sewage was turning green in the streets, and you couldn’t drive in the streets, your vehicle got stuck in the mud that was caused by the sewage,” said Van Woerden.

The issue was reported again yesterday morning (25/6) to the waste director, service delivery officials, and the health department. Residents are still waiting for them to respond. She said living in these conditions is not healthy for anyone despite their living conditions or where they reside and it’s sad that the officials ignore them.
