“The tragic events have underscored the need for urgent action to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children.”

The recent attacks on women in Bloemfontein have reignited heated discussions over the safety of certain dog breeds, specifically pit bulls, and the ongoing scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The events have underscored the need for urgent action to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children.

The brutal murder of women in Bloemfontein came to light shortly after the funeral of Sibongile Ngwana, whose charred remains were found on the M10. Just days later, Nomathemba Kweleta (27) was attacked by four pit bulls in Namibia Square, Bloemfontein, on Monday (17/6).

In another incident, Judy Mpho Moalusi, a teacher at Tsoseletso High School, was allegedly killed by her violent boyfriend.

Following the announcement of her executive council, new Free State Premier MaQween Letsoha Mathae addressed the recent events, expressing deep sorrow and calling for immediate action against GBV.

Mathae emphasised the necessity of ensuring safety for all, particularly women and children, in light of Moalusi’s death, which has sparked widespread outrage.

Mathae also extended condolences to Kweleta’s family, noting that the pit bull attack has reignited the debate over the safety of certain dog breeds. She announced plans to implement effective safety measures to prevent such attacks in the future.

The conversation around the safety of pit bulls and other dangerous dog breeds is not new in the province. In 2022, the call for the removal of pit bulls from communities gained traction as fatalities linked to these dogs increased. The then Free State Health MEC, Montseng Tsiu, voiced support for these calls, labelling pit bulls as bloodthirsty and dangerous.

“Each day we learn of yet another death while these dogs bring nothing but sorrow to many homes that have lost loved ones to this vicious and bloodthirsty breed. It is possible that there are many more unpublished and unaccounted deaths caused by this breed over time,” said Tsiu.

During the funeral of Olebogeng Mosime (8), who was also attacked by a neighbour's pit bull in Vista Park, Bloemfontein, in November 2022, Mangaung Deputy Mayor Mapaseka Nkoane called for a ban on pit bulls.

While many community members supported the banning of pit bulls, the Bloemfontein-based SPCA opposed killing these dogs. Instead, the SPCA urged the public to hand over their pit bulls, advocating for humane treatment and proper rehoming practices.
