Free State police spokesperson Stephen Thankeng said the body of an unidentified woman was discovered on Sunday morning (25/2) at 8.30am.

Thankeng said police officers discovered the body in an open field near Phumlani Cemetery. The victim had suffered multiple stab wounds across her body, with her throat slashed. Emergency medical services personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

“The deceased is believed to be in her 30s, light in complexion, medium to average height and has short hair. She was wearing blue jeans, a yellow T-shirt and shoes. A wig was also found next to the body,” Thankeng added. Police suspect the murder may have occurred elsewhere, since no bloodstains were found on the scene.

According to the latest crime statistics, 1,135 women were murdered in South Africa in the three months from October to December 2023, an increase of 3.1% from the previous year.

No one has yet come forward to identify the victim and claim the body. Thankeng requested that anyone with information contact constable Thabiso Senatla on 081 431 5484 or visit their nearest police station.
