A fire Thursday at the Centlec cooling towers is believed to have been started by an unknown suspect, igniting fears of a large-scale disaster in the Bloemfontein CBD.
Security personnel informed him the fire was started deliberately by the perpetrator who set alight tires underneath the cooling towers resulting in the flames engulfing the base of the structure, said Centlec spokesperson, Lele Mamatu.

Amid the chaos, security personnel rushed to the scene in an attempt to apprehend the suspect. However, the security guard slipped and sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. Employees were also evacuated for safety including those in the call centre and control room.

The Mangaung fire department was called to the scene to extinguish the fire and normalise the situation. Mamatu apologised for the inconvenience caused by the fire at the cooling towers.
