“The initiative is also placing a strong emphasis on skills training and knowledge sharing.”

The Central University of Technology, Free State wants to create 650 jobs by the end of February from the Pothole Repair Programme that was started to repair roads and address infrastructure challenges in the province. The goal is to repair 70,000 m2 of road sections by March.

CUT in collaboration with the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport launched this initiative in November. Thus far, 550 jobs have been created already.

“The initiative focuses on empowerment, skills-building, and creating jobs for unskilled women and youth, while also repairing roads and addressing infrastructure challenges,” said CUT spokesperson Seithati Semenokane. “Work is now underway in all five districts of the province, with road sections in Mangaung, Xhariep, Lejweleputswa, Thabo Mofutsanyana, and Fezile Dabi receiving attention.”

‘Programme will lead to improved road conditions’

The programme emphasises information sharing and skills development, offering 650 participants Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) accredited training and the research being conducted will ensure that the solutions implemented for long-term road maintenance are sustainable, said Semenokoane.

“This programme highlights the positive impact of collaboration, innovation, and community empowerment. It will also lead to improved road conditions and a more prosperous future for Free State residents.”
