“The funding is in response to government’s call to reduce GBVF cases and offer support to victims.”
The Thusanang Trauma Centre in Lichtenburg has been awarded R1 million in funding to assist gender-based violence and femicide victims and survivors in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality.
North West Social Development MEC Lazarus Mokgosi handed over the cheque this weekend, said departmental spokesperson, Petrus Siko. The funding is in response to the government’s call to reduce GBVF cases and offer support to victims.
He appealed to the management of the centre to use the money wisely, to capacitate the centre and provide psychosocial support and overnight accommodation to victims.

The handover forms part of the second leg of Thuntsha Lerole, an accelerated service delivery programme in the province.
The financial assistance from the government will enable them to continue to fight against GBV, said Thusanang Trauma Centre founder and project manager Christina Pretorius. She thanked the Department of Social Development, which has been providing the organisation with funding to run the trauma centre for the past ten years.
It provides advocacy by facilitating and making sure cases of domestic violence are reported and also assists victims of violence by accompanying them to court. It also conducts door-to-door awareness campaigns, visiting schools to educate the youth on how they should protect themselves against crime and violence.
