Families of Lohatla fire victims to be taken care of: Minister of Defence─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:13 Sun, 15 Oct 2023

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans has vowed to ensure that the bereaved families of the six South African National Defense Force (SANDF) members who died in a fire are well taken care of.
Minister Thandi Modise said this during the memorial service for the soldiers, who died when veld fires ravaged the Lohatla Combat Training Centre in Northern Cape. The memorial service for Abraham Desember Morajane, Sipho Berrington Cele, Sithembiso Wiseman Ndwalane, Noxolo Faith Ngubane, Prince Michael Mthethwa and Londiwe Purity Zulu was held at the training centre on Thursday (12/10). Families of deceased, representatives of government and SANDF members gathered to pay tribute to the soldiers.
Modise also expressed her gratitude to the families of the soldiers and pledged to deal with those who started fire. SANDF is investigating the cause of the fire.

“We are going to get a report and if anybody is found to be responsible or negligent, we will take action against them,” Modise said. She added that the fire is a wake-up call, and that the department will be looking into supplying Lohatla with dam water, since the centre plays an important role in ensuring army forces are always prepared to protect the nation.
“The vast training area is crucial for military exercises, but it also poses unique challenges, including risks of veld fires due to the surrounding natural environment,” she said.
The emotional gathering also saw the families of the deceased being given an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about their loved ones. Preparations for the funerals of the deceased are yet to be finalised.
On Friday (13/10), the SA Army Foundation donated 1 330 blankets, 1 330 mattresses, 1 330 stretchers and 65 tents to SANDF for the personnel who lost their shelter and personal belongings in the fire.
