The police in the Free State are investigating the death of a first-year student at the University of the Free State's (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus.

Police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring said the 19-year-old student formed part of students who were drinking on Saturday (30/9). The students were celebrating a 20th birthday anniversary –some were drinking and some were not. “The deceased was last seen on Saturday, shortly before midnight, and was found on Sunday  by other students.”

Following the discovery made by students, campus security and police were summoned to the campus. The student was declared dead by medical personnel. “The cause of death is yet to be determined. The name of the student can't be disclosed until the parents or next-of-kin are officially informed.”

The university has since released a statement about the death of the student. “The management of the University of the Free State is saddened and shocked by the death of a first-year student who passed away on the Qwaqwa Campus.”

Dr Martin Mandew, Campus Principal: Qwaqwa Campus, said the university is making psycho-social support available to the family as well as to students in the residence where the student stayed.
