Women from the Bokamoso Luncheon Club had a day filled with joy and education at an art museum.

The women over the age of 60 from various townships in Bloemfontein were given a chance to visit the Oliewenhuis Art Museum as a symbolic celebration of their birthdays.

Lucy Motaung, who arranged the tour, said the women were very happy, as for some it was their first time at the museum. She described the day as a blessing as some of them had not been out for a long time. “The highlight of the day for them was riding the rides at the museum, such as the merry-go-round [African Carousel Rides].”

The trip, sponsored by the Babu Frederick Foundation, was not only a fun trip, but it was also educational as the staff at Oliewenhuis were able to arrange for a tour around the museum explaining the art. “The staff at the art museum said they would feel bad if they let us leave the museum without any proper tour. Even though we had not made a booking, they were able to arrange a tour around for us.”

Motaung also commended the staff at the art museum for how they treated the women on their special day, as they did not have to struggle with anything. The art museum has also extended an invitation to the women to join them on Monday (25/09), as they will be hosting their Heritage celebration. Motaung said a plan will be made for the women to attend the celebration.

With their Heritage celebration, Oliewenhuis promises a relaxing family event, whereby there will be background music, stalls selling food in the back garden, and activities to keep the children entertained.
