“These cattle were in a horrific condition when we arrived, and the Bloemfontein SPCA team had no choice but to humanely euthanise these poor cattle to end their suffering.”
Over 150 animals were put down by the SPCA as they were severely burnt following the alarming wildfires that hit the Free State this past weekend.
160 sheep and 2 tortoises were euthanised by the SPCA in Bloemfontein-based as they were badly injured. An SPCA inspector Werner Botha said they also had to euthanise 28 cattle and two horses which were severely injured and burnt at Thaba Nchu and Tweespruit.
"These cattle were in a horrific condition when we arrived, and the Bloemfontein SPCA team had no choice but to humanely euthanise these poor cattle to end their suffering."
On Friday (25/8), Johann "Savage" Breytenbach from the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association issued a warning of possible veld fires over the weekend. Fires were reported at Soutpan, Brandfort, Vredefort, Zastron, and Boshof, among others. Some of these fires, in areas such as Dealesville and Soutpan, were contained while fires at Brandfort, Fouriesburg, and Ladybrand remained active.
On Sunday (27/8), Breytenbach reported overnight conditions had improved regarding the spread of fires at the hotspots. The windspeed had decreased, temperatures dropped, and humidity levels increased overnight. Most fires were expected to be contained by Saturday morning.
Botha said the SPCA's Bloemfontein team is working tirelessly in efforts to alleviate the pain and suffering of animals.
"Our hearts are shattered for these poor animals that suffered so immensely. The Bloemfontein SPCA inspectorate team's hearts go out to all the farmers who have to deal with tragedy. Our hearts are with you."
