The North West government has vowed to speed up the process of eradicating mud houses in the province.

Acting North West Premier Nono Maloyi made this commitment while handing over a house to a resident of Chaneng village in the Rustenburg Municipality as part of the Nelson Mandela International Day earlier this week. The initiative would go a long way to restore the dignity of many residents who still live in such conditions.

“Mud houses are not safe; they can collapse, injure or even kill our people, especially during rainy weather,” he said. ”I have instructed my team at the Human Settlements Department that we need to eradicate all mud houses … as a matter of urgency.”

‘Today my prayers have been answered’

Meanwhile, his spokesperson Sello Taitai said the house, which was built with alternative technology methods by a good Samaritan, was handed over to Bakang Peter Mahlangu (52), the only surviving member of his family who’d been living in a dilapidated shack for many years.

Mahlangu thanked the provincial government and other stakeholders for his house, adding he never thought he’d own a decent house. “Today my prayers have been answered. I am a happy man and this house will heal all the pain and suffering that I went through. I can't thank the government enough.”

In March this year Maloyi said R1.4 billion would be allocated to complete delayed housing projects. His department and the National Home Builders Registration Council had earlier conducted an audit of all blocked and incomplete housing projects in the province.
