A 30-year-old man is expected to appear before the Senekal Magistrate's Court on Monday, for allegedly setting his ex-girlfriend's shack alight following an argument at a local tavern.

Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring said the woman (33) from the Tambo section of Matwabeng, near Senekal, alleges she left her shack and went to a local tavern at about 17:20, where she had a few drinks on Saturday 8 July 2023. After arriving at the tavern, she had a confrontation with her ex-boyfriend who threatened to stab her with a broken beer bottle.

"On Sunday 9 July, at about 03:10, she received a call from her ex-boyfriend informing her that the shack was on fire. The shack was in flames but there wasn't anybody inside, as she slept at her sister's house. The suspect was traced and arrested," revealed Mophiring.

Police have opened a case of arson and the suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday.
