After appearing before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday, one of the accused in the Maselspoort racial attack incident might enter an agreement with the state.

The National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in the Free State, Phaladi Shuping, says the case against Jakobus Klaasen and Johan Nel was postponed to 21 August for a possible plea agreement.

On 25 December 2022, Klaasen, Nel and Stephanus van der Westhuizen trended on social media for all the wrong reasons.

The men became the centre of attention after a video of them allegedly assaulting children inside a swimming pool at Maselspoort went viral. It’s alleged the three accused claimed that the swimming pool at Maselspoort was reserved for white people only. When the police arrived, the groups had already dispersed.

A parent of one of the victims told the police his two boys, aged 18 and 13, were assaulted by a group of white men over the usage of a swimming pool.

Van der Westhuizen (47) was sentenced to a fine of R4 000 or 12 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of common assault. He apologised to the children, their father and the public.
