Three bodies of individuals who went missing following heavy rain in the Nama Khoi Local Municipality's district in the Northern Cape have been recovered.

According to the municipal spokesperson, Jason Milford, bodies of three out of five individuals who were swept away by the powerful current were discovered on Sunday 2 July 2023. He said the search and rescue teams recovered three bodies.

This means that two people are still missing and unaccounted for. Milford also reported that the severe flooding has caused significant damage and has had a profound impact on the local community.

"Due to the heavy floodwaters, the main access road leading to Springbok has been swept away, leaving the residents of Buffelsrivier without access to essential supplies such as food and medical provisions. This situation has created an urgent need for assistance in the affected area."

The police have deployed a helicopter at 08:00 on Sunday morning (2/7) to assist in the transportation of crucial supplies, including food and medical provisions, to Buffelsrivier.

“This effort aims to ensure that the community's basic needs are met, despite the challenging circumstances. The local Department of Social Development has mobilised to deliver food parcels to severely affected households in Buffelsrivier and Komaggas. This initiative seeks to provide immediate relief and support to those who have been most impacted by the disaster," he said.

The humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, is also expected to lend a helping held to those affected by the flooding in that area.

Milford says the organisation is en-route to the affected area.

"They will be providing much-needed resources and assistance to help alleviate the suffering of the affected residents. Their expertise and commitment to humanitarian aid will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the recovery and rebuilding process.

De Beers has prioritised a route through the Grootmis area for Buffelsrivier and Komaggas residents to gain access to Port Nolloth. Motorists at this stage are advised to proceed with caution.

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all the emergency responders, search and rescue teams, and volunteers who have tirelessly dedicated their efforts to supporting the affected community. We also appreciate the outpouring of support and solidarity from neighbouring communities, government agencies, and organisations.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and follow the instructions and guidance provided by local authorities. Together, we can work towards rebuilding and restoring the affected areas, and supporting the affected individuals and families during this challenging time," Milford added.
