Sol Plaatje municipal officials killed in car accident─── ZENANDE MPAME 09:13 Tue, 27 Jun 2023
The driver and bodyguard of the speaker of the Sol Plaatje Municipality in the Northern Cape died on Sunday 25 June in a car accident close to Christiana in the North West province.
“On Sunday at six in the morning, an unfortunate and tragic accident had occurred. Two of our officials, Elias Squire and Tebogo Dithabe, tragically passed away on the scene. Both officials were employees of the Sol Plaatje municipality, based in the speaker’s office. They were travelling to Johannesburg,” said Sol Plaatje Municipal spokesperson, Thoko Riet.
At the time of the accident, the officials were travelling to Johannesburg to pick up the speaker. Riet cautioned people against making assumptions about other passengers in the car.
“We will allow the law enforcement agency to continue with their investigations to determine what exactly caused the accident,” she said.
She added that the speaker, mayor and three other officials went with family members to the place of the accident on Monday to lay a wreath.
