Mangaung's dumping site becoming criminals’ playground─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:13 Mon, 19 Jun 2023
Criminal activities taking place at the Southern Landfill in Bloemfontein have raised eyebrows after two brothers, aged 19 and 22, nearly lost their lives.
The two brothers drove to the site to dump garbage when they were attacked by four unknown males. One of the assailants eventually shot at them.
It’s understood the two brothers collapsed to the ground and were picked up by the attackers, who drove the car until the driver lost control of the motor vehicle.
Free State police spokesperson, Loraine Earle, revealed the suspects then ran away, leaving the injured brothers behind. The two brothers tried to get some help until their father came looking for them. After finding them, the father rushed his sons to a local hospital where they are still receiving treatment.
Mangaung Metro spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, raised concerns over the criminal activities taking place at the dumping site and said the municipality is looking into addressing current waste challenges in the area.
“We are concerned about the crime happening at the Southern Landfill site. One of the things we are looking into is the fence that was stolen. The other thing we are also looking into is making sure in the new financial year that we take care of the fleet. That is going to assist us in collecting because the collection is really a problem that is visible.”

The DA in the Free State recently slammed the aged, badly maintained, and insufficient fleet in the troubled Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality.
Meanwhile, Earle revealed that the police were called and processed the scene and a case of attempted murder was opened at the Kagisanong Police Station. The police have since requested assistance with information that can help to solve the case and lead to the arrest of the suspects.
