A 35-year-old police constable from Theunissen in the Free State has been wounded after being shot at the police station Wednesday afternoon.

Provincial police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, said three unknown gun-wielding men wearing balaclavas entered the Masilo Satelite Police Station at about 01:30 and fired shots at the police officer who was on duty.

It’s understood that the female police officer sustained a gunshot wound in her stomach but she managed to fire shots back at the suspects.

Thakeng said a case of attempted murder has been registered for further investigation and residents are requested to provide information regarding these three black men.

“Anyone who might know about the whereabouts of these suspects can call their nearest police station or they can call the Crime Stop number at 08600-10111. Alternatively, members of the public can send information via MYSAPS APP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” he concluded.

On Monday 5 June 2023, a "highly skilled" officer, who was also part of a team tasked to investigate Thabo Bester’s case, allegedly shot and killed himself near the government garage in Bloemfontein. It’s understood that the investigator was seen at the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein just before, in courtroom M, where Judge Phillip Loubser delivered his verdict in Nandipha Magudumana's urgent application against the police, among others.

Lekone Morris Mohajane (55), who was the detective branch commander at Mooinooi Police Station in North West, was also shot and killed during a hijacking incident over the weekend, at his house in Hammanskraal in Gauteng. Following his visit to the home of the deceased, the Provincial Police Commissioner of North West, Sello Kwena, described Mohajane as one of the selfless and dedicated officers who played a crucial role in fighting crime.

He condemned the killing of police officers and indicated that resources have been mobilised to ensure that those behind these evil deeds are brought to book to face the full might of the law.
