Troubled Ditsobotla unable to pay workers' salaries─── 12:15 Thu, 25 May 2023

The embattled North West-based Ditsobotla Local Municipality has communicated that they are unable to pay workers' salaries for May.
In a letter that OFM News has seen, Municipal Manager, Mamorena Lethoko, indicated that due to the critical financial situation faced by the municipality, it is regrettable that salaries for May will not be paid until further notice.
Ditsobotla has been having trouble since the last local elections in 2021, and it's now under a coalition government led by the Patriotic Alliance.
The South African Municipal Workers Union in North West's secretary, Vincent Diphoko, told OFM News they are disturbed that workers are faced with such incidents, citing that it is demoralising staff morale.
Lethoko also indicated that claims and overtime work will be paid once the main salaries are paid first.
Municipal spokesperson Puis Batsile confirmed to OFM News that some workers reported for work today.
"Such incidents should be communicated with workers earlier so that they can make arrangements with the creditors. This affects people's life badly and we are not happy about it as a union," says Diphoko.
OFM News learned that other municipalities in the province may also fail to pay salaries.
