The biggest contributor to water losses comes from leaks in the infrastructure of municipalities.
Free State municipalities have been urged to fix as many leaks as possible in their pipes, especially during dry seasons.
Water and Sanitation Communication Specialist, Marcus Monyakeni, says municipalities should work around the clock to amend the irregularities that contribute to water loss in the country.
The biggest contributor to water losses comes from leaks in the infrastructure of municipalities.
Monyakeni says to prevent water shortages during the impending winter, it is important to instill in all water consumers the culture of conserving water during rainy seasons.
He adds that most of the water that is unaccounted for comes from leaks that have not been repaired, so municipalities need to embark on a fixing journey.
Communities should be given a toll-free line that is only used by municipalities for reporting water leaks.
“When municipalities have a toll-free number, communities can also be watchdogs in assisting to report leaks in the communities to the municipalities.”
