The Department of Education in North West is set on improving the school infrastructure and curriculum of learners with special needs.
Currently, the province has 32 schools for learners with special needs, however, there is no autism school in the province.
The North West Education team visited the Western Cape Department of Education to benchmark the autism schools.
Departmental spokesperson Elias Malindi said the MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, and departmental officials visited the Western Cape Department of Education to benchmark the autism schools on 8 and 9 May 2023. He added the visit formed part of their efforts to give special schools equal the attention given to mainstream schools. Malindi added that Motsumi emphasised that the province is changing the game in dealing with learners with special needs.

As a result, Motsumi decided to take the infrastructure, inclusive education, curriculum and human resources teams to observe how the Western Cape is doing in this area. The North West Education team visited Chere Botha Special School in Belville and Beacon Special School in Mitchell's Plain to observe the infrastructure of the schools, how teacher allocation is done, and the curriculum followed by the schools.
The North West Education team visited the Western Cape Department of Education to benchmark the autism schools.
Motsumi said the visit will assist the department in understanding how other provinces are performing.
