The SPCA in Welkom faces closure after the management committee resigned.

The committee indicated that they were unable to continue serving the Welkom SPCA. The welfare is unsustainable due to a lack of funds and the absence of a management committee.

OFM News reported in 2016 that the Welkom SPCA would have to close its doors in two weeks because of financial constraints to continue serving the community.

“Our SPCA covers a vast geographical area. We are inundated by animals. We receive no government funding. We receive no municipal funding. We are solely reliant on our community and supporters for financial assistance. We have a huge financial burden, a burden which has escalated into a desperate situation,” said Sue Douglas of the Welkom SPCA.

A worker at the SPCA Ian Lombard recently asked for donations for a new bakkie to help them.

They were using a private vehicle that did not have a canopy to save the animals in the community.

The SPCA has appealed to anyone in the community who is passionate about animal welfare to open an organisation on the premises of the SPCA and to provide a feasible business plan to the National Council of SPCA (NSPCA).

No one from the SPCA has responded to OFM News' enquiry yet.
